There was a ruckus outside the Election Commission office in Delhi on Tuesday evening when the nomination of Congress leader Meenakshi Natarajan for one of the three Rajya Sabha seats from Madhya Pradesh was cancelled. According to the news agency, the nomination was cancelled for allegedly concealing legal matters in the affidavit. A Congress delegation led by KC Venugopal then reached Nirvachan Sadan, where they were stopped at the gate. Security personnel said they had not received any official intimation for the meeting, while Congress leaders wanted to go inside and present their side. This led to a heated argument between the two sides. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh alleged that they were being deliberately stopped and it was against the democratic process. He said they only wanted to submit their memorandum to the Election Commission. KC Venugopal, on the other hand, described the entire episode as "murder of democracy," while Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, supporting the decision to cancel the nomination, advised the Congress to introspect.
