Indore: What began as routine swimming practice at a school pool has now carried 19-year-old Bhumi Agrawal onto an international podium. The Indore athlete returned from the Modern Pentathlon World Championship in South Africa's Mossel Bay with four medals, marking a strong debut for India in one of sport's most demanding disciplines.Competing for the first time at the international level, Bhumi won gold in the individual biathle event, silver in triathle, and two bronze medals in the biathle and triathle mixed relays. The championship tested athletes in challenging beach conditions, where running on sand and swimming in open water replaced the familiarity of tracks and pools.Modern pentathlon events are known for their technical difficulty.IPL Auction 2026IPL Auction 2026: Full list of sold and unsold players for all teamsIPL 2026 team and squad List: Updated players for all 10 Teams; who got whomIn biathle, athletes complete an 800-metre run, shift directly into a 100-metre swim, and return for another 800-metre run without breaks. Triathle adds cycling to swimming and running, demanding sharp transitions and sustained stamina. In South Africa, rain-swollen waves added another layer of difficulty."The competition was at the beach, and after rainfall, the waves became strong. Swimming in those conditions was difficult, but I focused on finishing the race," Bhumi told TOI, recalling the toughest moments of the championship.Bhumi's sporting journey began at the age of 12 when she took up swimming at her school, The Emerald Heights International School, and later trained at the Shishukunj Swimming Academy. Over the years, she competed in state and national swimming championships, represented Madhya Pradesh at the National Games in Goa in 2023 and Uttarakhand in 2025, and finished fourth at the Khelo India University Games in Rajasthan.Despite consistent effort, there was a phase when results did not reflect the hard work, and she briefly considered stepping away from competitive sport.Behind the scenes, family support remained constant. Her mother, Megha Agrawal, managed daily pick-ups and drop-offs for early morning and evening training sessions, while her father, Govind Agrawal, stood firmly behind her sporting ambitions. Coaches Akash, Ankit, and Vedant guided her through the transition from swimming to pentathlon.Get an chance to win ₹5000 Amazon Voucher by taking part in India's Biggest Habit Index!
