Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday thanked the people of Maharashtra for backing the BJP-led Mahayuti in the recently concluded Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat elections, calling the verdict a strong endorsement of development-focused governance. In a post on X, Modi said the outcome reflected public trust in the alliance’s vision. “Maharashtra stands firmly with development! Grateful to the people of Maharashtra for blessing the Bharatiya Janata Party and Mahayuti in the Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat elections. This reflects trust in our vision of people-centric development," he wrote. “We remain committed to working with renewed energy to fulfil the aspirations of every citizen across the state," the prime minister added, lauding the BJP and Mahayuti workers for their grassroots efforts. The BJP-led Mahayuti delivered a decisive performance, winning or securing control in over 200 of the 288 Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats where elections were held. The BJP emerged as the single largest party, winning well over 120 urban local bodies, while its allies, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, together added several dozen councils and panchayats to the alliance’s tally. The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), comprising the Congress, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena faction and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP faction, was limited to fewer than 80 local bodies, retaining strength only in select pockets. The civic elections, spread across urban and semi-urban Maharashtra, are seen as a key test of organisational strength at the grassroots and a curtain-raiser to bigger contests such as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. Political observers say the results consolidate the Mahayuti’s dominance in urban Maharashtra and are likely to shape momentum ahead of future civic and state-level polls, a message the prime minister underscored in his post.
