Prithvi Shaw on Tuesday called Sapna Gill’s plea against him in an alleged molestation case ‘frivolous’, accusing her of playing a supposed ‘womanhood card’ to settle a ‘personal vendetta’. In a written reply to a sessions court in Mumbai, Shaw said Gill filed the case with the intention of maligning his image and gaining publicity. The case dates back to February 2023, when an altercation broke out at a Mumbai pub after Gill’s friend, Shobit Thakur, allegedly insisted on taking selfies with Shaw. Police claimed the situation escalated outside, with Thakur allegedly assaulted, while Gill and five others were later accused of chasing Shaw’s friend Ashish Yadav and demanding ₹50,000, leading to Gill’s arrest and subsequent bail. Gill, however, alleged that Shaw and Yadav assaulted her friend and that Shaw physically and sexually assaulted her when she intervened. She sought an FIR against Shaw, but a magistrate ordered only a police inquiry. Dissatisfied, Gill moved the sessions court in April 2024. In the last hearing in September, the sessions court fined Shaw ₹100 for repeatedly failing to file his reply to Gill’s petition, despite earlier warnings, and granted him one final opportunity. “The present criminal revision application is false, frivolous, vexatious and filed with the sole intention to malign, defame and harass the respondent by misusing his public image and celebrity status," Shaw’s reply said. Shaw called Gill a ‘struggling actor’, saying she moved the court ‘with sole intention to gain publicity’ and ‘extort handsomely’ from the cricketer by implicating him in a false complaint. Responding to the reply, Gill’s lawyer Ali Kaashif Khan. stated that it does not cover a “single iota of evidence or alibi in support of his case".
