AfD Wins Historic Victory in Saxony-Anhalt Local Elections

German politics has seen the biggest political realignment since World War II. The far-right party Alternative for Germany has won a historic victory in the local elections in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt. The party has received almost 44 percent of the vote, the strongest electoral performance of any right-wing party in any German state since 1945. According to exit polls and official projections by German broadcaster ARD: The AfD has received. Chancellor Friedrich Merz's centre-right party Christian Democratic Union has received only 18.5% votes. The AfD's votes are more than double the CDU's performance. Despite the spectacular performance, the AfD has won 39 out of 83 seats in the state parliament. However, it fell just 3 seats short of the magic figure of an absolute majority (42 seats). AfD's main candidate Ulrich Sigmund and co-leader Alice Eindel have called the results "historic."
