Apple's Next-Gen iPhones to Feature Larger Camera Bump for Improved Low-Light Performance

Apple prefers big imaging upgrades in its next-generation iPhones. Continuing this tradition, the tech giant is reportedly working on to provide a bigger camera bump instead of a flush back bump for next-gen lens tech and better low-light performance. The iPhone 18 Pro Max could feature a much larger camera bump than it’s predecessors. However, this will make the device thicker and heavier, which contradicts with the earlier leak reports which suggested that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will have the same thickness as the last generation. Meanwhile, new reports have revealed that the bodies of the phones will be similar, with only the size of the camera bump increasing. This means the added thickness will likely be limited to a bigger rear camera module. According to the latest leaks, the added large camera could bring the total thickness of the iPhone 18 Pro Max to a whopping 13.77mm. For comparison, the iPhone 17 Pro Max has a thickness of 12.92mm. The leaked dummy units of the device suggested that most of these added dimensions come from bigger camera components but the aluminum camera plateau itself is also supposed to be thicker. It is believed that the design of the main body of the device will largely stay the same with the changes mainly focused on the rear camera module. In addition, the new rumors have also suggest the iPhone 18 Pro lineup could receive a major camera upgrade, spearheaded by a new 48-megapixel ultra-wide main image sensor and variable aperture lens system. The larger sensor is expected to improve the quality of the images by capturing more light and detail while the variable aperture camera would allow the lens to adjust the amount of light entering the sensor depending on shooting conditions. This could result in better photo performance in different lighting environments from bright to low-light scenes. The increased sensor size could also be an explanation for the rumors of a thicker camera module on the iPhone 18 Pro models, as larger imaging hardware generally requires more internal space. It is also rumored that Apple is also improving the telephoto lens, which could further increase the size of the rear camera module. Over the years, Apple has been upgrading its iPhone camera hardware to improve image quality, low-light photography and zoom capabilities. There are also rumors that the rear camera plateau as well as the individual camera lenses could be significantly larger, making the camera module one of the biggest design changes in the upcoming lineup.
