The Congress won only 19 seats in the 126-member Assam Assembly, its worst-ever performance in the state. Five years ago, the party won 26 seats. Gogoi himself lost to BJP MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami by over 23,000 votes in the Jorhat seat. In a Facebook post in Assamese, he said, "As Assam Pradesh Congress President, I take moral responsibility for this defeat. But in this battle of ideas, we will always remain steadfast and fight for the rights and dignity of the people. I am ready to fulfil whatever responsibility the party leadership assigns me in the future."
