Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi on Friday strongly criticised Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over alleged remarks about Kunki Chowdhury and her family in Sarupathar. Speaking to reporters after a campaign event in Sarupathar, Gogoi said that targeting a woman in this way reflects poorly on the Chief Minister. He added, “Attacking a woman like her says more about the Chief Minister than about anyone else and shows the low standard of his behaviour.” He noted that such statements have consistently undermined both the office and society. “Time and again, he has disrespected his position and Assamese society with such comments. The sooner he leaves office, the sooner the dignity of the role can be restored,” Gogoi said. Gogoi further mentioned that the Chief Minister’s repeated controversial remarks have damaged the reputation of the post and hurt public sentiment. According to him, the upcoming election provides a chance to remove what he described as corrupt and syndicate-driven politics. “This election is an opportunity to push out those running politics for personal gain and build a society that is progressive and inclusive. I believe voters will act on April 9 to end such influence,” he added. These statements came as Gaurav Gogoi, along with Lurinjyoti Gogoi, intensified campaigning for opposition-backed candidate Jibon Chutia of the Asom Jatiya Parishad. Speaking on the sidelines, Lurinjyoti Gogoi said that support for the opposition candidate is growing among voters. He also alleged that the current MLA is closely linked to the Chief Minister in alleged irregularities. “From the Apex Bank scam to problems in tea gardens, the MLA appears involved in a commission-based system connected to the Chief Minister,” he claimed. He pointed out other local concerns, including unresolved border disputes with Nagaland, delays in land ownership documents for many residents, communal tensions, and pending demands such as ST status for six communities. Expressing confidence in the voters, Lurinjyoti Gogoi said people are aware of past developments and political decisions. He stated that support is expected for Jibon Chutia, aiming to create a more inclusive society inspired by the ideals of Zubeen Garg.
