Assam Records Highest Voter Turnout and Notable Rise in Women's Participation in 2026 Assembly Elections

Assam has recorded a significant milestone in its democratic journey, with the 2026 Assembly elections witnessing both a record voter turnout and a notable rise in women’s participation, which has surpassed that of men. Official data shows that overall voter turnout reached 85.91 per cent—among the highest in the state’s electoral history. In a striking trend, female voter turnout stood at 86.50 per cent, exceeding male participation, which was recorded at 85.33 per cent. This development continues a pattern seen in recent elections, where women voters have steadily narrowed the gap and moved ahead. In the 2021 Assembly polls, female turnout had already edged past men at 82.01 per cent, compared to 81.60 per cent among male voters. A similar trend was visible in 2016, when women’s participation slightly exceeded that of men. The shift marks a sharp contrast to earlier decades, when a wide gender gap defined electoral participation in Assam. During the 1960s and 1970s, male turnout consistently outpaced that of women. In the 1962 Lok Sabha elections, for instance, male participation stood at 58.39 per cent, while female turnout was significantly lower at 42.05 per cent—reflecting the social and structural barriers that limited women’s political engagement at the time. Alongside the gender shift, overall voter participation in Assam has steadily risen over the decades. From a modest turnout of 47.54 per cent in the 1951 elections, the state crossed the 70 per cent mark in the 1990s and has consistently recorded over 80 per cent participation in recent years. Experts attribute the growing turnout—particularly among women to improved electoral infrastructure, sustained voter awareness campaigns, and broader socio-political changes that have empowered women across the state. The 2026 election figures underscore not just higher participation, but a more inclusive and representative electorate, with women emerging as an increasingly influential force in Assam’s democratic process.
