Bangladesh PM Tarique Rahman to Address UN General Assembly, Joining Family Legacy

Bangladesh PM Tarique Rahman will soon create a record of sorts. He will be the third member of his family to have the distinction of addressing the United Nations General Assembly. Tarique Rahman left on a five-day visit to New York on Monday. Tarique Rahman will address the UN General Assembly in New York. Rahman will become the third member of his family to address the UNGA when he makes his maiden speech at the 81st session on September 24. Former President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia have done so before him. His father Ziaur Rahman addressed the UNGA in 1980, while his mother Khaleda Zia addressed the forum in 1993. The Bangladesh Prime Minister's Office reported that PM Tarique Rahman, his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman and others on the tour have left for New York for 5 days. The Prime Minister's Press Secretary Saleh Shibli reported that after a three-hour stopover in Istanbul, Rahman is expected to arrive at New York Airport at 5: 55 pm (JFK) on September 22. Secretary General of the Foreign Affairs Ministry Siyad Alam Rahman told the heads of the foreign affairs team that Rahman is expected to arrive in New York before the UNGA.
