Bangladesh President Shahabuddin Expected to Resign Amid Government Uncomfortability

According to political sources and media reports, Bangladesh may soon have a change of power again. President Mohammad Shahabuddin may resign almost two years before the end of his five-year term. Speculation has been rife that the government is no longer comfortable with him remaining in office. A senior leader of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) told PTI, "There is a possibility that he (Shahabuddin) will resign soon." Speculation over Shahabuddin's resignation has intensified in the past two days, as several media outlets in Bangladesh have reported that the Tarique Rahman government is considering a change of presidency. Shahabuddin is the only person from the previous Awami League government who has remained in office after the student-led uprising in July-August 2024 that toppled the government of then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hasina fled India on 5 August 2024, while a senior government official quoted Shahabuddin as saying that he was angry with the government again.
