The Calcutta High Court on Thursday (July 2, 2026) questioned the Bengal Police on the freezing of the bank accounts of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The court wondered that the complaint was filed in the evening and the notice was also sent the next day that the bank accounts were frozen. The court has asked what was the need for such haste. It has also sought a report on the deposits in the party's bank accounts. The court was hearing a petition by the TMC challenging the freezing of the accounts. A single bench of Justice Saugata Bhattacharya was hearing the matter, Bar and Bench reported. Justice Bhattacharya suggested that he could allow the accounts to be de-freezed provided the bank accounts are operated under the supervision of a special officer. The court said that this special officer could be a retired judge of the High Court, who would be appointed by the court. However, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the West Bengal Police, did not receive any such order. Justice Mehta said that such a request would be made in due course of time.
