Calcutta High Court Warns West Bengal Government Over Repeated FIRs Against Trinamool Congress Leader Abhishek Banerjee

The Calcutta High Court on Monday came down heavily on the West Bengal government for repeatedly filing FIRs against Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP and party's national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. The court warned that if similar cases continue to be filed against him, it may issue a blanket order restraining the state government from filing any fresh case against Abhishek Banerjee without the court's permission. While hearing petitions seeking quashing of the three FIRs, Justice Saugata Bhattacharya said, "I will pass a blanket order restraining the filing of further FIRs against Abhishek Banerjee." The court also continued the protection against any coercive action against Abhishek Banerjee in these three cases. The three FIRs sought to be quashed against Abhishek Banerjee were registered on July 4, July 11 and July 23. The main concern of these cases is the allegations related to'Seva Ashraya, "a community health initiative started by Banerjee last year. Two of the complaints were filed on July 4 and July 11, while another complaint was filed by a person named Abhijit Das.
