CBI Arrests Proclaimed Offender Shyamala Barman in Post-Election Violence Case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday (18th June, 2026) carried out a major crackdown in the case related to the 2021 post-Assembly election violence in West Bengal and the murder of Manik Maitra. CBI has arrested a proclaimed offender named Shyamala Barman, who was absconding for a long time from the Siliguri district of the state in this case. In fact, the accused Shyamala Barman was absconding since the registration of the FIR in this case in 2021 and never participated in the investigation or trial. CBI had also announced a cash reward of Rs 50,000 for her capture. CBI had registered the case on 27th August, 2021 in compliance with the order of Calcutta High Court dated 27th August, 2021. For this, FIR No. 104/2021 dated 5th May, 2021 of Sitalkuchi Police Station of Cooch Behar district of the state was taken over by CBI, which was related to the allegations of post-election violence and murder of Manik Maitra. CBI had filed a charge sheet in the case on 18th April, 2022 and further investigation on 26th September, 2022 against six more accused.
