Congress Candidate Milan Pradhan Arrested in Old Murder Case, Sent to Judicial Custody

The Congress candidate in the Nandigram by-election, Milan Pradhan, was arrested on Friday. He has been sent to judicial custody till October 3. Milan Pradhan has moved the Calcutta High Court against his detention. The court will hear his plea on Tuesday. Appearing for Pradhan, his lawyer said that elections are to be held on October 6, yet the petitioner is already in custody. The lawyer also pointed out that the last date of campaigning is October 4 and he sought protection from the court. Taking note of this, the court said, Well, tomorrow, "pointing out that the matter will be heard on Tuesday. Milan Pradhan was produced in court after being arrested in an old murder case. An East Midnapore district police official said that Milan Pradhan had a pre-arrest warrant against him. On the basis of this warrant, he was arrested on Friday and after being produced in court on Saturday, the petitioner is already in judicial custody. The Trinamool Congress candidate from Nandigram, Sanchita Dey, was sent to judicial custody on a day when her nomination was withdrawn.
