Congress Steps Up Preparations for Punjab Assembly Elections in 2027

There is still time for the Punjab Assembly elections in 2027, but the Congress has stepped up its preparations. The party leadership is worried that factionalism, multiple power centres, and infighting could be exploited by rival parties. That is why the Congress high command has increased its focus on Punjab. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi have held a meeting of senior Punjab leaders with Punjab in-charge Bhupesh Baghel. The purpose of this meeting is to assess the state of the organisation, election preparedness, and ongoing discussions about leadership. The party has since set up a three-member observer committee, including Ajay Maken. The committee has been tasked with evaluating the situation in Punjab and making suggestions on future strategy. The committee's report will name a new Punjab Congress president. The seriousness of the Congress leadership regarding Punjab is evident from the ever-increasing meetings. The party has held four important meetings on Punjab affairs in the last two weeks. It is an indication that the high command wants to invite close to 70 party leaders, including former state presidents, MLAs, for consultations.
