Congress Workers Protest Over Candidate Selection in Malda's Chanchal Area

Murtuz Alam, Samsi: Soon after the announcement of the Congress candidate list, massive protests erupted in Malda's Chanchal area. A section of local Congress workers demanded that Anjarul Haque Johny be fielded. But the party announced the name of former MLA Asif Mehboob. Angry workers broke into the party office in Chanchal. The protesters also vandalized the party office in front of the office. Furniture and tyres were burnt on the road in Tarlatala intersection in front of the office. The protest went on for a long time demanding a change in the candidate. Angry Congress leaders and workers alleged that district president Isa Khan had compromised with the Trinamool Congress to get Asif Mehboob a ticket in exchange for money. However, there has been no official response from the district leadership so far. The protesters have made it clear that the movement will intensify if the candidate is not changed quickly. In this situation, the Congress has decided to reduce the number of tickets.
