The controversy is now deepening over the singing of Vande Mataram at the Congress headquarters on Independence Day. A complaint has been filed with the Delhi Police against former Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. The complaint seeks an FIR to be registered against the two leaders and an investigation into the matter. The complaint was filed on August 16 by advocates Kunal Vinayak and Shubh Sharma with the station house officer of the concerned police station. The complaint states that during the singing of Vande Mataram at the Congress headquarters in Delhi on August 15, Sonia Gandhi made certain gestures which the complainant saw as an objection to the singing of the song. The complaint also cites publicly surfaced videos and media reports. The complaint seeks an investigation into Rahul Gandhi's statement referring to a purported video in which he says, "We are not singing Vande Mataram." The complainant says that Rahul Gandhi's alleged behaviour and the motive behind the entire episode is linked to the proposed amendment to the National Honour Bill 2026.
