New Delhi: Delhi Police has lodged an FIR against Meta India concerning the prevalence of Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse Material (CSEAM) on the social media giant’s platforms following the NHRC’s directives. NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo shared the development through a post on X, “Police filed the FIR on NHRC’s directions.” UPDATE! Acting on our directions, Delhi Police has registered an FIR regarding the availability of Child Sexual Exploitative and Abuse Material (CSEAM) on platforms operated by @MetaIndia. Priyank Kanoongo (@KanoongoPriyank) November 4, 2026 This measure follows increasing worries about the alleged distribution and advertising of child sex abuse material on paid ads on Facebook and Instagram. The matter was earlier taken up by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) which had summoned Meta India’s senior executives in September over the charge that ads were enabling people to access such illegal content. Meanwhile, Meta has announced several artificial intelligence-driven measures to strengthen its content detection and removal systems. The company revealed that between January and June 2026, Facebook and Instagram removed 5.3 million items of Child Sexual Exploitation material in India with over 98% reported proactively by the platforms. Meta has also added new monitors that can spot suspicious advertising, stop links to illegal outside content, and penalize offenders. The company has reiterated its commitment to child safety and said it would continue working with authorities to combat online child exploitation. The Delhi Police investigation will now examine the matter further.
