Economic Expertise Crucial for India's Economic Growth: P. Chidambaram

Congress leader and former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram questioned the government on India's economic policies, manufacturing, private investment, regulation, foreign trade, and competition. He said that a strong political leadership needs to be accompanied by economic expertise that deeply understands the Indian and global economy. Speaking at Business Today's'India @ 100'event, Chidambaram said that no matter how strong the political leadership is, the government needs leadership that has a deep understanding and expertise in economic matters. He cited the example of the 1991 economic reforms. Narasimha Rao was providing political leadership, while Dr. Manmohan Singh played an important role as an economic expert and'economic brain'in GDP. According to Chidambaram, there is no other person in the government today who has economic expertise like Dr. Manmohan Singh. He said that it is necessary to have an economic expert who understands the global and Indian economy both theoretically and practically. According to him, without such economic expertise, the path to economic growth would not be easy.
