Election Commission Meets TMC Factions Amid Organisational Dispute

The Election Commission on Saturday (September 12, 2026) held a meeting with both factions of the party - the Mamata Banerjee faction and the Ritabrata Banerjee faction - over the issue of the TMC's organisational dispute. It is to be discussed in this meeting which faction will have the Trinamool's twin symbol. The Commission first held a meeting with Ritabrata Banerjee's Trinamool faction, followed by the Kalighat Trinamool i.e. Mamata Banerjee's faction. However, there is little possibility of a final decision on this issue before the by-election in West Bengal. The Election Commission may issue an interim order on this issue. At the same time, according to Commission sources, for the time being, the Trinamool Congress's'twosome or twosome'election symbol may be frozen and the two factions may be given temporary names and symbols to contest the by-election. This means that the Bengal by-election may see a Kalighat Trinamool TMC vs. Ritabrata TMC electoral battle. The Trinamool Congress's name and Kalyan TMC's name continue to be disputed. The Election Commission has asked its MPs and MLAs to support them in this meeting.
