On October 3, 1990, East and West Germany were officially reunited. After 45 years of being a divided nation, the country was united. This was the first time a divided country was united after a mass movement. On the morning of October 3, a new dawn dawned for the people on both sides of Germany. Millions of people had gathered in front of the Brandenburger Gate in Berlin since the night of October 2 and it was now going to be a country after 45 years. On November 9, 1989, the Cold War had begun in Eastern Europe. A spokesman for the East German Communist Party announced several new policies regarding the border crossing of East and West Germany. When asked when these changes would take place, he said, "As far as I know, it is effective immediately, without any delay." After this, the people of East Berlin flocked to the Berlin Wall. Some people shouted "Tor auf" ("Open the gate"). Within a few hours, the guards went inside. Berliners were welcomed with flowers from East Berlin.
