Goa's Mass Movement Gains Momentum: A New Political Equation Emerges

The ongoing struggle in Goa over land, environment, unchecked development, and the rights of locals is now showing signs of taking the shape of a mass movement. Various social organisations and citizen groups, including Save Goa and Enough is Enough, are gearing up to launch a state-wide mass movement from October 2. This is expected to lay the foundation for a new pressure group or alternative political equation outside Goa's traditional politics. According to Save Goa functionaries, this mass movement will be built by bringing together various issues related to Goa's land, environment, communidad land, large development projects, townships, and local people's rights. Against this backdrop, the month of October could prove to be decisive for Goa's politics. Political discourse in Goa is no longer limited to opposing a single project. There is also a movement towards creating a new political pressure group in the state by uniting various civil organisations and activists. Unlike the traditional political system of the BJP and Congress, no local-based environmental rights movement can emerge through this alternative political movement.
