Imran Khan’s lawyer, Salman Safdar, on Tuesday met the former prime minister at Adiala Jail in Pakistan’s Rawalpindi and confirmed that Khan was “completely fit and well." The meeting, which lasted nearly three hours, came after the Supreme Court of Pakistan granted Safdar full access to Khan on its directives. Speaking to the media after the visit, Safdar said the PTI founder appeared healthy and that he had a detailed discussion with him. “It is not appropriate to say anything further until the report is filed in the Supreme Court," he added. Earlier on Tuesday, a two-member bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan, approved the petition to meet Khan. The court instructed that Safdar should be given full access to the former prime minister so he could file a written report. Justice Afridi also directed jail authorities that Safdar should not be kept waiting outside the prison. Safdar had asked the court whether his report should be limited to living conditions only, citing concerns about Khan’s health following a recent medical procedure. The chief justice clarified that the report should focus solely on living conditions. Another lawyer, Latif Khosa, who filed a separate request to meet Khan, was turned down by the court, and the hearing was adjourned to February 12. Khan, 73, has been in custody since 5 August 2023, after his conviction in a corruption case. This was the first visit by anyone since December 2, when Khan’s sister Uzma met him for 20 minutes and reported that he was in good health. Pakistan’s authorities had stopped weekly meetings between Khan and his family and lawyers, citing alleged political misuse of such meetings.
