Weather Update for May 5: Thunderstorms and rain are unlikely to lash large parts of the country. The latest forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) raises concerns for normal life. Weather conditions are set to worsen in 17 states from north India to the south and northeast on May 5. According to the department, these regions will not only receive torrential rains, but destructive winds gusting to 70-75 kmph are expected to cause heavy damage. Thunderstorms have been forecast in the eastern states, which could prove to be a major threat to life and property. The administration has advised people not to venture out of their homes unnecessarily. Among the 17 states that the IMD has issued an alert for are major states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Haryana, Rajasthan and Punjab. Apart from this, the situation in hilly areas like Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir is also expected to be severe in the south and northeast states of Meghalaya, Kerala, Araria, Bihar, and Tripura.
