Indian Government Assures No Legal Action Against Student Protesters Over Paper Leaks

The government has told the Supreme Court that it is still serious about its promise not to take legal action against students protesting over paper leaks. The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) called off its protest last month after being assured that no coercive action would be taken against the thousands of volunteers who had gathered in the heart of the capital to demand accountability and exam reforms. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said, "There was some miscommunication or misinformation about the FIRs registered against the protesters. I have received instructions to say that the government is serious about that promise made to the students." Advocate Vrinda Grover sought to know whether the FIRs against the protesters would be withdrawn or quashed. She also stressed that the issue is about improving the education system. "These are young people whose lives are still left." We have FIRs in Bihar, Bengal, Assam, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh to get the FIRs quashed, "Mehta said.
