Indian Government Introduces Bill to Make Insulting 'Vande Mataram' Punishable

Advertisement On the first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament on Monday, the Central Government will introduce a bill in the Rajya Sabha to make insulting'Vande Mataram'a punishable offence. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will introduce the'Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026'in the House. The bill will amend the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971. Under the existing law, insulting the national flag, the Constitution and the national anthem'Jana Gana Mana'is an offence punishable by up to three years in jail. Under the proposed amendment, the national song'Vande Mataram'will also be given the same legal protection as the national anthem. Legal action will be taken against anyone who obstructs the singing of'Vande Mataram'or insults it in any form. The government is bringing this bill at a time when the 150th anniversary of'Vande Mataram'is being celebrated across the country.
