Indian Parliament's Monsoon Session Set to Begin Amid Calls for New Anti-Defection Law

The monsoon session of Parliament is set to begin on Monday (July 20). The session is likely to discuss several important bills. The opposition parties are preparing to corner the government on several issues. Meanwhile, Congress MP Manish Tewari has stressed on the urgent need for a new anti-defection law and demanded a discussion on it. He referred to the politics of opportunism and said that the current form of the Lok Sabha is the exact opposite of the mandate of 2024. Congress MP Manish Tewari said, "The mandate given by the people in 2024, there has been a huge difference in the form of today's Lok Sabha. This difference has come in the last 4 months. Parliament should leave all the work and discuss that the country needs a new anti-defection law. Opportunistic politics should be stopped." He added, "The biggest priority of Parliament in this monsoon session should be that it should stop all the work and discuss the urgent need for a new anti-defection law. We should discuss outside the state and make it a matter of policy and how to make it reflective of the real political developments in the country.
