Former Union minister and BJP leader Dinesh Trivedi arrived in Bangladesh on Friday via the Petrapole-Benapole land border and took charge as India's new high commissioner. Dinesh Trivedi is the first politician in the country to hold the post that goes to Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officers. Dinesh Trivedi was seen casually carrying his trolley bag into Bangladesh when the border gates opened. He was accompanied by his wife Mrinal Trivedi. After crossing the border, Trivedi said it was nice to be here. Trivedi, a former Union minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader, has succeeded Pranay Kumar Verma, a 1994-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service. Pranay Kumar Verma's tenure ended last month. Pranav's tenure lasted for four years and he witnessed the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government in a student-led uprising in August 2024 and the decline in India-Bangladesh relations under the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus. Dinesh Trivedi's appointment comes at a time when Sheikh Hasina's government in August 2024 and Trivedi's leadership in India has been experiencing a long political journey.
