Indian Prime Minister Modi's Address to Nation Draws Criticism from Opposition Parties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address to the nation on Saturday drew sharp criticism from opposition parties. Opposition parties said the PM was shedding crocodile tears. The opposition also accused him of violating democratic norms and misusing the model code of conduct as his address came amid the ongoing assembly elections in several states. In fact, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address to the nation on Saturday evening came a day after the Lok Sabha did not pass the Constitution Amendment Bill (131st Amendment) related to women's reservation. During the address, the PM accused the Congress and its allies of "foeticide" in their efforts for women's reservation. He apologised to women and said the government would never give up efforts to empower women. He warned that women would punish the Congress and its allies for this sin. In response, parties like the CPI (M), TMC, RJD and CPI have called it a frustration of the Prime Minister's defeat. The opposition has already said that the government has completed the political drama of the 16th April 2026 Rajya Sabha women's reservation (CPI-M).
