Iran's Funeral Strategy: A Diplomatic Message to the World

Preparations are underway for the burial of Iran's former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. On July 4, 2026, when delegations from more than 30 countries and non-state entities arrived in Tehran to bid farewell to Khamenei, different verses of the Quran were read at the funeral. Experts believe that the selection of these verses of the Quran was not just religious, but through them Iran has tried to give a very diplomatic message to the world. When representatives of many countries were passing by Khamenei's coffin, the verses were changing according to each country. Although the Iranian government has not made any official comment on this, international analysts say that this was all part of a pre-planned and well-thought-out strategy. According to international security analyst Shaheen Modares, "The most important things in this funeral were not read by any official anywhere, but by those who were reading the Saudi verses."
