At the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of Japan, Sanae Tarichi, will pay an official visit to New Delhi from 1 to 3 July 2026. During this visit, she will co-chair the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit with Prime Minister Modi. This will be Prime Minister Tarichi's first official visit to India. The meeting between India and Japan assumes significance in the current global situation and signs of a shift in the Trump administration's traditional Indo-Pacific policy. It remains to be seen what the strategy of the two countries will be going forward as they are already looking at multiple options for cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, this summit will provide an opportunity for the two countries to review and strengthen the full spectrum of bilateral cooperation as well as exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest. This visit follows Prime Minister Modi's visit to Tokyo in August 2025 (15th India-Japan Annual Summit) and marks the further intensification of the India-Japan Special Strategic Partnership and the Global Strategic Partnership established in 2006.
