All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) Kanhaiya Kumar on Sunday, launched a sharp attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma , alleging a lack of development and criticising his public remarks, as campaigning intensified ahead of the Assembly elections. Speaking to reporters after attending an election rally for Congress candidate Girish Baruah, Kumar claimed that there has been “no real development” in the Chief Minister’s constituency. He alleged that while an international school had been established, government schools were being shut down. Kumar further accused the Chief Minister of creating hurdles in the Congress candidate’s campaign within his own constituency. On the controversy surrounding allegations by the Congress regarding multiple passports of the Chief Minister’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma , Kumar said the matter should be investigated and appropriate legal action taken if any wrongdoing is established. He also criticised the Chief Minister’s reported remark that his wife should be “shot” if the allegations were proven true, describing the language as unbecoming of a public office-holder. “The Chief Minister’s language is like that of a goon. This is not the language of an administrator,” Kumar said. The remarks come amid an intensifying political exchange between the Congress and the BJP as the campaign for the Assembly elections enters the final stage.
