The CPI (M) -led Left Front on Saturday announced its candidates for the October 6 by-elections to Nandigram and Rejinagar assembly seats in West Bengal. The CPI has fielded Shantigopal Giri from Nandigram and Syed Asad Ali from Rejinagar. After the Congress, the Left has announced its candidates, while the BJP and the TMC are yet to open their cards. Bengal's Nandigram seat has been a major political battleground between the BJP and the TMC. Suvendu Adhikari won from here in the 2026 assembly elections. Giri also contested the assembly elections this year on a Left ticket, where he got only 2,997 votes against Suvendu Adhikari's 1,27,301 votes. Suvendu won from both Nandigram and Bhabanipur seats. He later retained Bhabanipur and vacated the seat, while the by-election to Rejinagar was held on Friday. Aam Janta Party founder Mohammad Kabir Rezaul and Congress leader Humayun Rezahi left Nandinagar vacant after the by-election.
