A 27-year-old murder undertrial at the Yerawada Central Prison was grievously injured after he was attacked with a piece of stone tile by two other undertrial inmates inside Barrack number 1 of the prison on Monday morning. Police have identified the injured inmate as Vishal Nagnath Gaikwad (27), a resident of Laxminagar in Yerawada, who has been in judicial custody after his arrest in January 2019 in connection with a murder. Police have identified the two assailants as Akash Satish Chandalia (30), a murder accused and Deepak Sanjay Reddy (27), an accused in an attempt to murder case. The incident took place around 6.45am on Monday. “Initial probe points to an old rivalry between the injured inmate and the attackers. While the morning activities of the prison schedule were on early Monday morning, Chandalia and Reddy suddenly attacked Kamble with a piece of stone tile. After hearing the commotion, the prison guards rushed to the spot and stopped the attackers. Kamble was rushed to the hospital,” said an officer from the Yerawada police station.
