In a major move ahead of the Legislative Council elections, the Maharashtra Congress has suspended two of its candidates. The party has taken this action against candidates who withdrew their candidature at the last minute after filing nominations for the elections. The suspended leaders include Wardha-Chandrapur-Gadchiroli seat candidate Shailesh Agrawal and Yavatmal local bodies constituency candidate Sahebrao Kamble. The party said that Kamble and Agrawal were declared party candidates on their request. However, they misled the leadership and withdrew their nominations, creating difficulties for the party, according to news agency PTI. The party said their primary membership in the Congress has been cancelled. The Mahayuti alliance, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP, is likely to get 5 out of the 17 seats in the legislative council elections to be held this month, as the opposition candidates, including Kamble and Kamble, withdrew their nominations before the deadline for the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections ends on Thursday, June 18. The counting of votes for the council seats will take place on June 22.
