The Mahayuti has taken an early lead in the elections to 17 seats of the Maharashtra Legislative Council. The Mahayuti candidates have been elected unopposed in 6 seats, while the rest of the 11 seats will go to the polls on 18 June. On the other hand, the Mahavikas Aghadi has suffered a setback before the elections as many of its candidates have withdrawn their nominations. The ruling alliance has got a psychological edge with the unopposed election of 6 candidates of the Mahayuti. However, the rebel candidates in Nashik and Jalgaon have increased the difficulties of the Mahayuti. Now the remaining 11 seats will be put to the test in the voting on 18 June. Significantly, the Legislative Council elections do not directly elect the representatives of the political parties. The members of the Legislative Council are elected indirectly, which means that instead of ordinary citizens, the elected representatives of the people and certain sections of the people elect the members of the Legislative Council through Single Transferable Vote.
