Malaysia's PM Congratulates India's PM Modi on Becoming Longest-Serving Elected Prime Minister

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Wednesday congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister, describing the achievement as a testament to his years of public service and leadership. In a post on X, Ibrahim extended his greetings to Modi, who completed 4,399 days in office as an elected Prime Minister, surpassing the record held by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. “Heartiest congratulations to PM Modi on this historic milestone of becoming India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister. This achievement stands as a testament to his years of dedicated public service and leadership in advancing India’s development, prosperity and standing on the global stage,” Ibrahim said. Highlighting the close ties between the two countries, the Malaysian leader said, “Malaysia values its close and longstanding friendship with India, and I look forward to continuing our cooperation in strengthening bilateral ties and expanding opportunities for our peoples.” “I wish PM Modi continued success and the people of India continued peace, progress and prosperity,” he added. Prime Minister Modi achieved the milestone on Wednesday after completing 4,399 days in office as an elected Prime Minister. For the purpose of the comparison, Nehru’s tenure is counted from 1952, following India’s first general elections. He had led the country’s interim government from 1947 until the elections were held. Although former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi served in office for more than 14 years, her tenure was not continuous. Modi is now the longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister in India’s history. Since first assuming office in 2014, he has secured successive mandates in 2019 and 2024, becoming the first Prime Minister after Nehru to win three consecutive terms. During his tenure, the Modi government has overseen several major infrastructure and development initiatives, including the new Parliament building, the Central Vista redevelopment project, Kartavya Path, Vande Bharat trains, the Statue of Unity, INS Vikrant, the Kashmir rail link, Noida International Airport, the Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), and the Ganga Expressway.
