BJP leader Yumnam Khemchand Singh, who has been elected as the leader of the Manipur BJP Legislature Party, will likely be the 56th Chief Minister of the state. The decision was taken at a party meeting held in Delhi, marking a significant step towards the restoration of an elected government in Manipur after nearly a year under President’s Rule. Yumnam Khemchand Singh, belonging to the Meitei community, represents Singjamei Assembly constituency in Manipur. He served as the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly from 2017 to 2022. The 62-year-old MLA is a two-time MLA from the Singjamei constituency, having won the seat in the 2017 and 2022 Manipur Assembly elections on a BJP ticket. From 2022 and 2025, he held important ministerial responsibilities, serving as Minister for Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, and the Education Department. His selection as legislature party leader now positions him to lead the state as it transitions back to an elected government. In his personal life, Singh has been promoting martial art of Taekwondo. Last year, he became the first Indian to receive the 5th Dan black belt in traditional Taekwondo, awarded by the Global Traditional Taekwondo Federation in Seoul.
