The Green-Tech Foundation (GTF) on Saturday, April 18, issued a strong warning to the Meghalaya government, stating that the ongoing dispute over Lumpongdeng Island could turn fatal if the 60-year lease for a proposed luxury resort is not cancelled immediately. The protest at Malki Ground took a serious turn after GTF chairman H. Bansiewdor Nonglang’s health condition worsened. He was shifted from Civil Hospital to Woodland Hospital on Saturday evening. Despite medical care, he has reportedly continued his fast for ten days without taking food. Following his hospitalisation, secretary general Ritre Lyngdoh stepped in to continue the protest and lead the hunger strike. Speaking to the media at the site, he accused the authorities of ignoring the issue and said their silence had pushed the situation to a critical stage. He further warned that the group was prepared to take extreme steps if their demand was not met, saying the protest could end with bodies being taken away from the site if the island is not restored. The organisation is insisting on the cancellation of the 60-year agreement that allows a private company to develop a luxury resort and spa on Lumpongdeng Island in the Umiam area. According to the group, the land belongs to the public, and the long-term lease effectively removes community control over it. The authorities have not issued any statement on the situation so far, but the protest at Malki Ground has been carried forward despite serious health concerns among the participants. The ongoing confrontation is also becoming a major concern for the administration, as dissatisfaction is rising over the use of natural resources for private development.
