Monsoon Season Brings Contrasting Weather Patterns Across India

This monsoon season has come as a season of contrasts for India. On the one hand, parts of the country are receiving so much rain that 85 people have lost their lives so far in Assam. On the other hand, states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Kerala, and Rajasthan are on the verge of drought. The Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the rain in August-September will also be below normal. That is, the states that have not received rain, there is little hope of relief in the coming days. This year the monsoon has shown two faces. Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha received 29 percent more rain. The east and northeast received 30 percent less rain, and south India received 28 percent less rain. We will talk about the states that have received less rain: UP received only 261.4 mm between 1 June and 31 July, while the normal 357.6 mm should have been, that is, a deficit of 27%. Rainfall in the rainy season of 2025 was only 6%. In the eastern states, too, there is a deficit of 34% or less than normal (ID7).
