Pakistan has launched a new diplomatic campaign against India over the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT). As part of this, an international conference was held in Islamabad on Tuesday, 30 June. The conference was attended by Pakistan's top civil and military leaders. Among the participants in the conference were Pakistan's Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir. Outraged by India's tough stance, Pakistan will step up its campaign by raising the Indus issue at international forums. Speaking at the conference today, 30 June, Pakistan's Commissioner for Indus Waters Affairs Syed Muhammad Mehr Ali Shah said that he has written four times to his Indian counterpart since April last year about the fluctuations in the flow of the Chenab River. Mehr Ali Shah said that there has been no response from India so far. According to Pakistan's leading newspaper Dawn, Mehr Ali Shah said that the fluctuations in the flow of the Chenab River are not a technical problem, but a strategic threat. In his speech, Shah said that "the issue of the Indus basin is more than just a matter of livelihood and national security."
