Pakistan's Top Military Officer Visits Iran to Discuss Regional Peace and Stability

Field Marshal Asim Munir, Pakistan's Chief of the Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, arrived in Tehran for talks on bilateral and regional issues with Iranian officials. According to a statement by the Pakistan Army, the Chief of the Army Staff is accompanied by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. The visit is being undertaken as part of Pakistan's efforts to promote regional peace and stability. The Pakistan Army said, "The Field Marshal will focus on promoting efforts towards a peaceful, lasting and comprehensive resolution of the conflict in the Middle East." On Sunday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei had said that the visit is aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation and continuing Pakistan's efforts to promote peace and security in the region. Pakistan has been at the forefront of efforts for peace and resumption of mediation efforts in the stalled US-Iran peace talks. In April, Pakistan succeeded in brokering a ceasefire, which was followed by an agreement to end the US-Iran conflict, however, it could not move forward in the peace process after the 28 February attacks on Iran and Israel's response to the conflict.
