Birbhum is a TMC stronghold. Of the 11 seats in the district in 2016, 9 were won by the TMC, the remaining 2 by the Left and Congress. The TMC won all 11 seats in the 2021 assembly elections. The BJP failed to open its account. On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Birbhum's Suri and targeted the TMC on multiple issues. A number of local issues and incidents in Birbhum also came to the fore. Even on this day, the TMC rule was termed as'jungle raj'by the PM. Terrible incidents took place in Bagtui village of Rampurhat on the night of 21 March 2022. A series of houses were set on fire in the village after the murder of TMC leader Bhadu Sheikh. Ten people, including children and women, were burnt to death in the incident. Modi targeted the TMC on this day. There are several stone quarries in Birbhum. Sand-stones are being looted from there. He said,'Sand-stones are being looted in support of a big leader of the TMC. There is anger among the residents of Palakhali block in Birbhum. There are allegations of land acquisition by the TMC government.
