President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday attended the convocation ceremony of Fakir Mohan University in Odisha’s Balasore, and inaugurated the university’s newly built auditorium. Addressing students and faculty, the President underscored the vital role of universities in driving inclusive growth, innovation and social transformation. She said institutions of higher learning have a special responsibility to act as catalysts for societal progress by nurturing critical thinking, ethical leadership and research that addresses both local and global challenges. Paying tribute to eminent Odia writer and social reformer Vyasakabi Fakir Mohan Senapati, President Murmu recalled being deeply influenced by his timeless story Revati during her student days. She said the story, which highlights a young girl’s determination to pursue education in the 19th century, left a lasting impression on her. Recounting her own journey, the President said she studied in a remote tribal village and later moved to Bhubaneswar to complete her high school and college education, drawing inspiration from Fakir Mohan Senapati’s life and works. Emphasising the importance of education in one’s mother tongue, President Murmu noted Fakir Mohan Senapati’s deep love for the Odia language. She said learning in the mother tongue helps students better understand their cultural environment, traditions and civilisational values. In this context, she highlighted that the National Education Policy 2020 places strong emphasis on the use of mother tongue as a medium of instruction to keep students connected to their cultural roots. The President also spoke about India’s rich knowledge tradition, saying that the country’s scriptures and ancient manuscripts contain invaluable wisdom not only in literature and poetry but also in fields such as science, medicine, astronomy and architecture. She encouraged young students to undertake research in these areas, adding that by understanding the past and comprehending the present, they can help shape a better future for themselves and the nation. Congratulating the graduating students, President Murmu said that knowledge, passion and commitment would help them earn respect and recognition in society. She advised them to remain dedicated in all their endeavours, noting that while a successful life is important, a meaningful life is even more valuable. She urged students to contribute to the welfare of others, especially those who have been left behind in the development process, stressing that true societal development lies in the development of all. The President appreciated Fakir Mohan University for its emphasis on research and outreach programmes alongside academic pursuits. She noted that the Balasore-Bhadrak region is known for paddy cultivation, betel leaves and fisheries, and commended the university for conducting research and training programmes in these sectors. She also lauded initiatives such as ‘Back to School’, ‘Earn While Learn’, ‘Each One Teach One’, as well as environmental awareness and beach-cleaning programmes. Highlighting the university’s forward-looking approach, President Murmu said that establishing research centres on blue crabs or horseshoe crabs—species found in abundance along the Balasore and Bhadrak coastlines—reflected its foresight and commitment to region-specific research. Concluding her address, the President said that the growth, security and technological advancement of all sections of society are essential for the country’s progress. Expressing confidence in Fakir Mohan University’s academic vision and community engagement, she said the institution would continue to play a transformative role in building a sustainable, equitable and value-driven future.
