Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday said that all Sikh MLAs and ministers will appear before the Akal Takht in Amritsar on the issue of sacrilege law on June 29. Mann made the statement after a meeting with party MLAs in Amritsar. The meeting deliberated on the strategy ahead in view of the directions of the Akal Takht, the highest religious body of the Sikhs. Mann told reporters in Amritsar, "Our MLAs and ministers will go there and submit their views in writing." Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Garhaj had on June 15 summoned Sikh MLAs and Sikh ministers from all parties to appear before the Akal Takht on June 29 on the issue of sacrilege law. Non-Sikh cabinet ministers have been asked to submit their views on the matter in writing before June 29. The Akal Takht and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee had objected to the sacrilege law "Jagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Sahib" (Amendment) Act, 2026, saying that it was removed from the Sikh Panth, the highest religious body of the Sikh religion, without consulting the state government.
