The Punjab Government has issued instructions to strictly enforce the rules regarding the prominently written Punjabi (Gurmukhi) language on the signboards of shops and commercial establishments across the state. The Labour Department has asked all the Assistant Labour Commissioners and Labour-cum-Conciliation Officers to ensure effective compliance of Rules 23 and 24 of the Punjab Shops and Commercial Establishments (First Amendment) Rules, 2023. The instructions issued by the government have been issued after a representation was made to the Chief Secretary by Dr. Jagmohan Singh Raju, a retired IAS officer and Chairman of KS Raju Legal Trust. In his representation, Dr. Raju had said that despite the passage of more than three years since the rules came into force, a large number of shops and commercial establishments in the state are still not putting up signboards in Punjabi or giving prominence to Punjabi in accordance with the law.
