Rana Gurjit Singh, MLA and ex-officio member of the municipal corporation, and 26 elected councillors have sought quashing of the election by declaring it illegal. The petition states that in the May 26 election, the Congress and its supporters had won a majority by winning 27 out of 50 wards. Despite this, the first meeting was delayed. The petitioners allege that a meeting was called on July 8 on the directions of the High Court but the election process was not followed. After the oath, the proposal for the mayoral post was sought from a group of only 24 councillors, while the 27 Congress-supported councillors were neither given a chance to field a candidate nor cast their vote. The petition also alleges that there was no hand-holding, counting and complete videography.
