Punjab Police Reshuffle: Amritsar Police Commissioner Removed, Harmanbir Singh Gill Takes Charge

Amritsar, Punjab, on Friday (August 7, 2026) witnessed a major reshuffle within the police department. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of Punjab removed Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar from his post and appointed Harmanbir Singh Gill as the new Police Commissioner in his place. Harmanbir Singh Gill, who had recently taken over as Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Border Range, Amritsar, has now been given the additional charge of Commissioner of Police, Amritsar. On the other hand, after being removed from the post of Police Commissioner, Gurpreet Singh Bhullar has not been given any new posting and has been directed to report to the state DGP office until further orders. However, the reasons behind this sudden reshuffle in Punjab Police are not clear, but the action is being linked to the claims of former Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar that he had caught hold of the recently concluded student agitation in the country's capital, Delhi. Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bhullar and former Punjab Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bittu have also been transferred from the Amritsar Police.
