Russia-Ukraine Conflict Intensifies: Steel Factory Damaged, Civilian Casualties Reported

Tensions escalated further on Sunday (16 August 2026) in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Ukraine carried out large-scale drone strikes in several areas of Russia. Russia's retaliatory strike also damaged ArcelorMittal's steel factory in Kryvyi Rih. It is one of Ukraine's largest steel companies and part of Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal's ArcelorMittal Group. The company reported that the attack damaged vital parts of the plant's power generation and blast furnace. Production had to be partially halted thereafter. Russia also carried out missile and drone strikes in several areas of Ukraine. Russian strikes in Kryvyi Rih killed 2 people and injured 14. Wildfires were also reported in Sumy and Zaporizhzhia regions. Russian strikes in Kyiv destroyed several places. A large fire also broke out in the city's book market. According to local authorities, injured people and loggers around the capital, Russia has made a large number of wildfires.
